Vaccination is the administration of a vaccine to produce immunity to a disease. Vaccinations are considered to be the most effective and cost-effective method of preventing infectious disease. Immunization by vaccination reduces the number of deaths and disabilities from infections such as influenza, whooping cough, pneumonia, and chickenpox.
Although children receive the majority of the vaccinations, adults also need to stay up-to-date on certain vaccinations including tetanus and diphtheria. In addition, those adults who have never had the chickenpox or measles, or the vaccines against these diseases, should consider being vaccinated. Childhood illnesses such as measles, mumps, and chickenpox can cause serious complications in adults.
